These unique raku-fired ceramic pieces reflect the diverse and multidisciplinary experience of Melvyn Malkin. His prodigious career spans decades of design and artistic achievements.
Mel's background in art includes degrees in Architecture and Fine Arts (drawing and printmaking). For many years he practised architecture and continued to show drawings and prints in commercial galleries. Work in clay started in 1989 and he is largely self-taught in this medium. The results reflect his personal experience augmented by numerous international ceramic workshops.
Mel is represented by twenty five art and craft galleries across Canada and the USA. He is the recipient of numerous design awards. His work is regularly included in group and solo ceramic shows and is held in many individual, art gallery and corporate collections.
"Sophisticated simplicity. These two words best describe the work of Canadian artist Melvyn Malkin." - Anne Kuffler, Ariana Gallery (Royal Oak, Michigan). "Malkin's work resonates sophistication of design and employs a masterful use of materials," Kuffler says. "He blends the ancient techniques of the East with modern materials and infuses the influence of the European masters to his still life interpretations and abstracts. Malkin's pieces are refreshingly inventive."
